Discover tips to reduce pet hair loss during autumn

To protect ourselves from low temperatures, coats, blankets, and warm, hearty meals are some of the alternatives adopted during the coldest times of the year. However, pets also require care and attention during this period, especially regarding their fur.

On March 20th, the season known for easing the summer heat, dropping temperatures, and stronger winds arrived in Brazil. Autumn is famous for being a preview and a way to prepare people for the winter cold, and is also remembered for the falling leaves. To protect ourselves from the low temperatures, coats, blankets, and warm, hearty meals are some of the alternatives adopted during the coldest times of the year. However, pets also require care and attention during this period, especially when it comes to their fur.

"Hair has a growth cycle composed of four phases, with the exogenous phase being responsible for shedding itself. This process of hair growth and shedding is expected and normal, especially during seasonal changes like spring and fall," explains Botupharma veterinarian Bruna Fabro . Because the seasons in Brazil are not usually distinct, hair tends to fall out year-round.

However, it's important to be vigilant during the fall if your dog or cat's fur is shedding more than usual, and if your pet has patchy fur and redness on their body. "There are several causes that can be related to increased hair loss, and some may be accompanied by itching, which causes great discomfort for animals. These include: flea bite allergies, reactions to cleaning products, medication side effects, food allergies, skin infections or inflammation, behavioral problems, and even tumor growth/development. Therefore, it's important to be vigilant and seek specialist care immediately for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management guidance ," says the veterinarian.

There are some simple precautions that can help with hair loss. The main one is brushing your pet's coat every two days. Other important tips include avoiding excessive bathing, controlling fleas and ticks (both on the dog and in the environment), and walking your pets more frequently, as this contributes to their well-being and also results in a stronger, shinier coat. "Another key point when it comes to dog and cat coats is their diet, as it directly influences their health. Nutrient and vitamin deficiencies in the diet, in addition to causing delayed growth and weight loss, predispose pets to numerous diseases and can exacerbate hair loss ," Bruna emphasizes.

Some nutrients are essential for pet coats and can be supplemented, such as Omega-3, which makes fur even softer and shinier. "Vitamin D3 is also an essential vitamin for pets and helps maintain their coats, in addition to having immunomodulatory effects. However, unlike us humans, for example, dogs and cats do not convert vitamin D3 through sun exposure. Therefore, it should be provided with food at the dose recommended by your veterinarian," says the veterinarian. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is essential for improving the appearance of the coat, nails, and even the skin.

Another important vitamin is vitamin E, which has antioxidant properties. It's also important to maintain a balanced diet not only to ensure strong, healthy fur but also to prevent your pet from becoming ill or suffering from nutrient and vitamin deficiencies.

"Make sure your pet is receiving a balanced diet that meets all nutritional requirements, taking into account size, age, and special needs, so your pet can have a better quality of life and spend more time with you," concludes Bruna.
