With so many challenges faced in recent times, the pursuit of well-being has become a priority in many people's lives. Pet parents looking to adopt new habits also want their pet to have a good quality of life.

Thais Matos, a veterinarian in the Trust & Safety department at DogHero , the largest pet services company in Latin America, advises pet owners on establishing a daily routine for their pets.

"This routine shouldn't be altered, and when we talk about a balanced diet, we shouldn't change the timing, much less the quantity of meals. In times of routine changes, as has been the case during quarantine, we end up spending more time at home and, consequently, we are likely to make many exceptions to our pet's routine. This can cause worrying behavioral and physiological changes ," says Thaís.

When evaluating the necessary diet for dogs and cats, the veterinarian will consider several factors, such as breed and sex, weight and age, neutering status, and sedentary lifestyle. Thaís also mentions that health-related factors, such as allergies or food aversion, among other characteristics, are also considered.

"These conditions require extra care with the diet. For example, pets with unexplained food allergies need to first go on an elimination diet to identify the possible cause," he says.

Another constant search for pet parents is for healthier alternatives to their pet's diet. Regarding this, and how to organize your pet's routine, especially when the owner is at home, the DogHero veterinarian offers these tips:

Fruits and vegetables - There are a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be recommended as treats for pets, such as: persimmons, sweet potatoes (always cooked), apples (a great option for overweight dogs and cats), bananas, watermelon, carrots (can be offered raw or cooked), mangoes, pumpkins, and turnips. Always remove peels and all seeds, as many are toxic and can cause choking. Small amounts of these foods are enough to provide nutrients and keep your pet happy. Owners should be careful not to overdo it and consult a veterinarian to ensure their pet isn't intolerant to any of them.

Nutrition for pets with joint pain - Nutrition is key to both preventing and alleviating symptoms caused by joint problems. In this case, food with specific components (calcium; chondroitin; collagen; glucosamine; L-carnitine; omega-3 and -6; and vitamins K2 and K3) is the best option.

Feeding Routine - How many times should a pet eat per day? The suggestion is once in the morning and once later in the afternoon. Offer meals in portions, always offering food at the same times. Between meals, avoid giving too many treats or pieces of your meal. Your pet may think that every time you eat, they get something too.

Prevent a sedentary lifestyle - If your pet is obese, it's important to avoid over-feeding treats. Owners can prioritize natural treats, such as vegetables and fruits. Pet parents should follow their veterinarian's recommendations and establish a routine for their pet's exercise.

Organize the mealtime area - Offer the meal in a familiar location. The place should be quiet so the dog can eat without interruptions and avoid eating too quickly.
